TL;DR: What are natural dog chews?
Natural dog chews are single-ingredient, fully digestible treats made from real animal protein like beef pizzle (bully sticks), beef collagen, beef cheek (power chews), trachea, and gullet. Sourced from grass-fed, free-range livestock, they contain no chemicals, won't splinter, and break down safely in your dog's stomach. They satisfy your dog's instinct to chew while supporting dental health, mental stimulation, and overall wellness.
Your dog was born to chew. It's not a bad habit. It's instinct. Chewing helps them explore the world, relieve stress, clean their teeth, and simply feel good.
Your dog was born to chew. The question isn't whether to let them. It's what to give them, and what to avoid.
This guide compares 18 types of natural dog chews side by side: what each one is made of, how long it lasts, which dogs it's best for, and how they stack up against each other. Every product includes chew time estimates so you know exactly what to expect before you buy.

Before You Buy: Why "Natural" Actually Matters
Not everything labeled "dog chew" is safe. The most common offender is rawhide, which is not a natural chew at all. Rawhide is made from the inner layer of cow or horse hides and is chemically processed with bleach, hydrogen peroxide, and other industrial agents. It does not fully digest in a dog's stomach and is a leading cause of intestinal blockages and choking.
In 2018, the FDA and CDC jointly investigated a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to contaminated rawhide chews, resulting in product recalls affecting thousands of pet owners. Several dogs became seriously ill. This was not an isolated incident. Contamination reports on rawhide-based products appear regularly in FDA enforcement records.
⚠️ The Simple Rule: If a chew is not fully digestible, it does not belong in your dog's mouth. Every chew in this guide is single-ingredient, fully digestible, and made without chemicals. That's the baseline. Everything below passes that test.
Bully Sticks
What Are Bully Sticks?
Bully sticks are made from a single ingredient: beef pizzle (bull muscle). They're fully digestible, high in protein (80-85%), and loved by dogs for their rich, meaty flavor.

🔑 Bully Sticks vs Collagen: The Quick Rule
If your dog needs high protein and you want the most variety in sizes, go with bully sticks. If your dog has joint concerns or skin/coat issues and you want a chew that lasts a bit longer, collagen sticks are the better pick. Most dog parents rotate both for a full range of benefits.
Collagen Sticks
What Are Collagen Sticks?
Made from beef skin, the same source of collagen in your dog's joints, bones, and connective tissue. They're denser than bully sticks and last about 20% longer.
Gourmet Collagen Sticks (Bully Coated)
Sizes: 4", 6", 12" | Chew time: ~30-50 min (20% longer than standard bully sticks)
Dense collagen core dipped in all-natural beef stew. 95% collagen + premium beef flavor. Best for moderate to power chewers.
| Factor | Bully Sticks | Collagen Sticks |
|---|---|---|
| Made from | Beef pizzle (muscle) | Beef skin |
| Primary benefit | High protein | Joint, skin, coat support |
| Durability | Standard | ~20% longer |
| Best for | All dogs | Dogs needing joint/coat support |
Can't decide? Rotate both for variety and a full range of benefits.

Super Collagen (Exclusive to Natural Farm)
Super Collagen is our premium collagen chew designed for maximum joint support and long-lasting engagement. Higher collagen concentration, denser texture, and hand-selected for optimal thickness.
Everything above targets moderate to power chewers. But not every dog has a jaw like a vice. Puppies, seniors, and dogs recovering from dental work need gentler options that still deliver real nutrition. That's where the next group comes in.
Beef Gullet and Beef Jerky
Beef Tendon
Made from connective tissue. Dense, fibrous, and takes real effort to work through. Collagen-rich with low fat and high protein. Excellent dental cleaning action. Best for moderate/light chewers. Chew time: ~20-40 min.
Pig Ears
A classic treat. Crunchy outside, chewy inside. Rich in omega fatty acids for skin and coat health. Single ingredient (pork ear). Great for all dog sizes. Chew time: ~10-25 min.
Note: Higher in fat. Best given in moderation (1-2 per week for most dogs).
Chicken Feet
Whole chicken feet, dried and ready to chew. High in glucosamine for natural joint support. Crunchy, low calorie, single ingredient. Best for small to medium dogs and light to moderate chewers. Chew time: ~3-10 min.
Cow Hooves and Stuffed Hooves
The outer shell of a cow's hoof. Extremely durable and long-lasting. For serious chewers only. Chew time: ~45-90 min.
⚠️ Caution: Very hard. Not recommended for puppies, seniors, or dogs with dental issues. Always supervise. Cow hooves can develop sharp edges as they break apart. Inspect regularly and remove the chew immediately if you notice cracking or splintering.
Stuffed Hooves are cow hooves filled with natural fillings for dual engagement: chewing + licking. Ideal for picky eaters and dogs who need extra motivation to chew. Same durability, added flavor.
Filled Bones
Real beef bones filled with natural fillings. Combining bone chewing satisfaction with irresistible flavors. Dual engagement (chewing + licking) for extended enjoyment. Chew time: ~30-60 min. Great for crate training, keeping dogs occupied, or as a special reward.
Note: As with all bones, supervise your dog and remove when the bone becomes small enough to swallow whole.
Beef Cheek Rolls
Made from beef cheek, a tough, durable muscle. Rolled and dried into a long-lasting chew that's safer than rawhide. Fully digestible, single ingredient, great dental cleaning. Best for moderate to power chewers and rawhide alternative seekers. Chew time: ~30-60 min.
Beef Trachea
Made from beef windpipe. Crunchy texture with a unique C-shape dogs love. One of the best natural sources of glucosamine and chondroitin for joint health. Lower fat than many chews. Available in 3" (small dogs, puppies 6+), 6" (medium), and 12" (large). Chew time: ~10-20 min.
Yak Cheese Chews (Himalayan Dog Chew)
If your dog powers through every chew you buy, yak cheese might be the answer. Made from hardened yak and cow milk using a traditional Himalayan recipe, these are some of the densest chews available. The milk is boiled, pressed, and slowly dried until it becomes rock-hard, giving your dog a serious chewing challenge that lasts.
Unlike beef-based chews, yak cheese offers an alternative protein source, making it a smart option for dogs with beef sensitivities. Naturally lactose-free (the pressing and drying process removes lactose), grain-free, and free of preservatives or artificial ingredients. Our yak cheese chews are held to the same quality standard as every Natural Farm product: sourced responsibly, produced in our USDA and FDA-inspected facility, and lab tested every batch.
Natural Farm Yak Cheese Chews
Chew time: ~30-45 min* | Best for moderate to power chewers (20+ lbs)
Made from yak and cow milk. Dense, hard texture that softens as your dog chews. When the chew gets small enough to swallow, microwave the remaining piece for 30-45 seconds to puff it into a crunchy treat so nothing goes to waste.
*Chew times are approximate. Actual duration varies based on dog size, chewing style, jaw strength, and storage conditions.

What Makes Quality Chews Different
Frequently Asked Questions
Are natural dog chews safe?
Yes, natural dog chews are safe when sized appropriately for your dog and used under supervision. Unlike rawhide, which is chemically processed and does not fully digest, natural chews like bully sticks, collagen sticks, and beef trachea are made from a single ingredient and break down safely in your dog's stomach. Always supervise chewing sessions, especially the first few times with a new chew type. Remove any piece that becomes small enough to swallow whole, typically at 2-3 inches. Choose the right size and thickness for your dog's weight and chewing style to minimize risk.
How often can I give my dog a natural chew?
Most healthy adult dogs can safely enjoy one natural chew per day, as long as chews make up less than 10% of their daily caloric intake. A standard 6-inch bully stick contains approximately 88 calories, so factor that into your dog's daily feeding plan. For puppies 6 months and older, start with 2-3 shorter sessions per week using softer options like thin or pixie bully sticks. Senior dogs also benefit from 2-3 sessions per week with gentler chews. Monitor your dog's weight and digestion when introducing chews, and adjust frequency based on their individual response.
What happens if my dog swallows a piece of a natural chew?
Natural chews are fully digestible, so small swallowed pieces will typically pass through your dog's digestive system without issue. This is a key safety advantage over rawhide, which does not break down in the stomach and can cause intestinal blockages. Single-ingredient chews made from beef pizzle, collagen, or beef trachea dissolve naturally during digestion. However, if your dog swallows a large piece whole, monitor for signs of distress such as vomiting, loss of appetite, gagging, or lethargy. Contact your veterinarian if any symptoms appear. To prevent swallowing large pieces, always remove the chew when it gets down to 2-3 inches.
Are bully sticks safe for puppies?
Yes, bully sticks are safe for puppies starting at 6 months of age, once adult teeth begin coming in. Choose softer, thinner options like pixie bully sticks or thin bully sticks, which are gentler on developing teeth and jaws. Keep sessions short at 10-15 minutes maximum and always supervise closely. Puppies under 6 months should not be given bully sticks or other hard chews, as their teeth and digestive systems are still developing. After each session, check your puppy's teeth and gums for any signs of irritation. One chew 2-3 times per week is a safe starting frequency for most puppies.
What are the best chews for aggressive chewers?
The most durable options for aggressive or power chewers are power chews, yak cheese chews, cow hooves, and braided bully sticks. Power chews feature a 2-in-1 design with a durable beef cheek exterior wrapped around a protein-rich core, lasting 2-3 times longer than standard bully sticks with chew times of 45-90 minutes. Braided bully sticks last 45-75 minutes because three sticks are woven together into a denser structure. Yak cheese chews offer 30-45 minutes of chewing from a dense milk-based protein source. You can also freeze any chew for 2-3 hours before serving to make it firmer and longer-lasting.
What are the best chews for senior dogs?
Senior dogs do best with softer, gentler chews that are easy on aging teeth and jaws. Recommended options include pixie bully sticks, thin bully sticks, beef gullet, and beef trachea. Beef trachea and beef gullet also provide natural glucosamine and chondroitin, which support joint health in older dogs. Avoid very hard chews like cow hooves, yak cheese, or extra thick bully sticks, as these can crack weakened teeth. Start with 2-3 sessions per week and keep sessions shorter than 15-20 minutes. If your senior dog has had dental work or missing teeth, consult your veterinarian before introducing any chew.
Can natural chews help with joint pain in dogs?
Yes, several natural chews contain compounds that support joint health. Beef trachea and chicken feet are among the richest natural sources of glucosamine and chondroitin, two compounds that help maintain cartilage and reduce joint inflammation. Collagen sticks provide collagen protein, the primary structural protein in cartilage, tendons, and connective tissue. Beef gullet (esophagus) also contains natural glucosamine in a softer, gentler format suitable for seniors and puppies. While natural chews provide meaningful supplemental joint support, dogs with diagnosed joint conditions like arthritis should also receive veterinary-guided treatment. These chews complement joint care but do not replace medical intervention.
Are bully sticks good for dogs' teeth?
Yes, bully sticks provide natural dental benefits through mechanical abrasion. As your dog chews, the surface of the stick scrapes against teeth, helping to remove plaque and tartar buildup before it hardens. This action also stimulates the gums and promotes healthy blood flow to the oral tissue. Firmer chews like standard bully sticks and collagen sticks are most effective for dental cleaning because they require sustained chewing effort across all teeth. However, natural chews should complement regular dental care, not replace it. Brushing your dog's teeth and scheduling veterinary dental checkups remain essential for long-term oral health.
Why do some bully sticks smell bad?
Bully sticks that have a strong, unpleasant odor are typically the result of poor processing or low-quality sourcing. High-quality bully sticks are slowly dried at controlled temperatures in sanitary facilities, which removes moisture thoroughly and results in little to no odor. A strong smell often indicates rushed drying, unsanitary conditions, or the use of chemical treatments during processing. Odor-free bully sticks are not treated with chemicals to mask smell; they simply start with better raw material and use proper drying methods. Store opened bully sticks in a sealed container in a cool, dry place to maintain freshness and minimize any residual scent.
What is the difference between bully sticks and rawhide?
Bully sticks are made from beef pizzle (muscle tissue), contain a single ingredient, and are fully digestible with no chemicals used in processing. Rawhide is made from the inner layer of cow or horse hides and is chemically processed with bleach, hydrogen peroxide, and other industrial agents to create its shape and appearance. The critical difference is digestibility: bully sticks break down safely in your dog's stomach, while rawhide does not fully dissolve and can cause intestinal blockages, choking, and chemical exposure. In 2018, the FDA and CDC jointly investigated a Salmonella outbreak linked to contaminated rawhide products. Veterinary organizations consistently recommend fully digestible chews over rawhide.
What makes Power Chews different from regular bully sticks?
Power chews feature a unique 2-in-1 design: a durable beef cheek outer layer wrapped around a nutrient-rich beef pizzle or esophagus core. This layered construction makes them last 2-3 times longer than regular bully sticks, with chew times of approximately 45-90 minutes depending on dog size and chewing intensity. Despite their durability, power chews remain fully digestible and are made from natural single ingredients with no chemicals or additives. They are specifically designed for dogs who destroy standard bully sticks, collagen sticks, and even braided options in under 15 minutes. Available in multiple sizes from 2-3 inches to 12 inches.
How long do different natural chews last?
Chew duration varies significantly based on your dog's size, chewing style, and jaw strength. Approximate ranges: Beef Jerky and Bully Bites (2-8 minutes), Pixie Bully Sticks and Beef Gullet (5-15 minutes), Thin Bully Sticks and Beef Trachea (10-20 minutes), Standard Bully Sticks (20-40 minutes), Thick and Extra Thick Bully Sticks (30-60 minutes), Collagen Sticks (30-50 minutes), Braided Bully Sticks (45-75 minutes), Power Chews and Cow Hooves (45-90 minutes), and Yak Cheese Chews (30-45 minutes). Actual duration varies based on dog size, chewing style, jaw strength, and storage conditions.
Can dogs be allergic to natural chews?
Yes, dogs can have protein allergies or sensitivities to specific ingredients. Most natural chews are made from beef, which is generally well-tolerated but can cause reactions in some dogs. If your dog has known beef allergies, consider alternative protein sources like pork (pig ears), chicken (chicken feet), or yak cheese chews (milk-based, no beef). Introduce new chews gradually and monitor for signs of allergic reactions such as itching, digestive upset, or skin irritation.
What are yak cheese chews and are they safe for dogs?
Yak cheese chews, also called Himalayan dog chews, are made from hardened yak and cow milk using a traditional recipe. They are extremely dense, high in protein, low in fat, and naturally lactose-free. They are safe for most adult dogs, with chew times around 30-45 minutes depending on your dog's size, chewing style, and storage conditions. They are not recommended for puppies under 12 months, senior dogs with weakened teeth, or dogs with dental issues due to their hardness. Always supervise, and when the chew gets small enough to swallow, microwave the remaining piece for 30-45 seconds to puff it into a safe, crunchy treat.
