How digestible are beef tendons?

Beef tendons are among the most digestible natural chews for healthy adult dogs. Tendon is connective tissue, primarily made of type I collagen with proteoglycan ground substance. Once your dog chews and swallows pieces, stomach acid and pepsin start breaking the collagen down, and pancreatic enzymes finish the job in the small intestine. In a healthy adult dog, transit through the digestive tract typically completes within 24 to 48 hours.

Two things make beef tendon significantly easier to digest than rawhide:

• No chemical processing. Rawhide is typically bleached, treated with lime or hydrogen peroxide, and sometimes bonded with adhesives. Those residues sit in the stomach for hours and can cause digestive upset. Single-ingredient beef tendon has none of that.
• Uniform protein structure. Collagen is one protein type that canine digestion is built to handle. Rawhide is a heterogeneous, chemically altered material that many dogs process poorly or partially.

Choose the right size for your dog. The chew should always be larger than what your dog can swallow whole, even after some wear.

• Small dogs (under 25 lbs): smaller, thinner tendons.

Beef tendon vs other dental chews

Storage and shelf life

• Cool, dry pantry. Store unopened bags in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Typical shelf life is around 6 months at pantry temperature.
• Freezer for long-term. Sealed in freezer bags, beef tendons keep well for 12 months or longer. Thaw at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving.
• Between sessions. After your dog chews, do not seal a partially used tendon in an airtight container while still moist. Let it air-dry on a paper towel for a few hours, then store dry.
• Signs to discard. Visible mold, unusual smell, softening, or slimy texture. When in doubt, throw it out.

For multi-dog households and daily chewers

If you feed beef tendons to more than one dog, or your household goes through chews weekly, three practical notes:

• Session separation. Multi-dog households benefit from separate spaces during chew time. Even the friendliest dogs can resource-guard a high-value chew.
• Size matching per dog. Match the tendon size to each individual dog's adult weight, not to the largest dog in the house. Sharing pieces across sizes creates avoidable choking risk.
• Protein rotation. Alternate across the week to keep dogs interested and prevent over-exposure to a single protein source. A common pattern: beef tendon two to three days, turkey tendon one to two days, bully sticks or collagen sticks as variety.
