What are bully sticks made of?
Bully sticks are a single-ingredient dog chew made from beef pizzle, the muscle of a bull. Natural Farm bully sticks contain nothing else: no added grains, no gluten, no artificial additives or preservatives, no colorings, no smoke or flavor sprays.
The beef comes from grass-fed cattle raised on premium ranches in the United States and Brazil. Both origins are stated openly. Every stick is slow-dried in our own USDA & FDA-approved facility in Forest Park, Georgia. Made-in-USA describes the manufacturing; the ingredient sourcing is dual-origin. Natural Farm does not conflate the two.
One exception in the naming: Power Bully Sticks combine beef pizzle with beef cheek for a denser, longer-lasting chew, so Power Bully is not classified as single-ingredient. Every other bully stick in this collection is one ingredient only. For a deeper look at how bully sticks are processed, see Natural Farm's guide to what bully sticks are made of.
What are the benefits of bully sticks for dogs?
A quality bully stick is one of the most useful chews you can hand a dog. The benefits fall into four categories, all of which are well documented by the American Kennel Club and mainstream veterinary sources.
Dental hygiene
The mechanical scraping of a bully stick helps reduce plaque and tartar on the tooth surface, and the chewing action massages the gums. Bully sticks complement daily tooth brushing; they do not replace it.
Digestibility
Beef pizzle is soft muscle tissue and is highly digestible for most dogs. If a small piece is swallowed, it typically breaks down in the stomach rather than lodging, unlike rawhide.
Mental stimulation
Chewing releases calming endorphins and channels a dog's natural drive to work with their mouth. A bully stick is one of the simplest tools for reducing crate anxiety or redirecting boredom from furniture.
Nutritional value
Bully sticks are rich in animal protein and amino acids that support muscle, coat and skin. They are grain-free by nature and suitable for many dogs with grain or poultry sensitivities.
What are the different types of bully sticks?
Not every bully stick is the same. Natural Farm sorts every stick by two axes: length (4, 6, 7, 10 and 12 inch) and thickness tier. Below is the full type map so you can match the right chew to your dog.
| Tier | Best for | Ingredients |
|---|---|---|
| Thin / Pixie | Puppies, small breeds under 15 lb, light chewers, seniors | Single-ingredient beef pizzle |
| Standard | Everyday chew for small and medium dogs, moderate chewers | Single-ingredient beef pizzle |
| Select | Moderate chewers who blow through Standard in under 15 minutes | Single-ingredient beef pizzle |
| Extra Thick | Large breeds, power chewers, longer sessions | Single-ingredient beef pizzle |
| Braided | The longest single-ingredient session; large breeds and power chewers | Three pizzles braided together |
| Rings & Springs | Variety; changes the grip and jaw angle to extend chew time | Single-ingredient beef pizzle, shaped |
| Cold-Dried™ | Power chewers who want the densest, longest single-ingredient chew | Single-ingredient beef pizzle, proprietary low-temperature dried |
| Power Bully | Extreme power chewers who need the densest bite in the range | Beef pizzle + beef cheek (not single-ingredient) |
Two proprietary lines worth knowing: Cold-Dried™ Bully Sticks use Natural Farm's low-temperature drying process to preserve the pizzle's natural fiber structure, delivering roughly 97% crude protein and a chew that consistently outlasts standard bully sticks. Power Bully is the exception to the single-ingredient rule; it is transparently labeled as pizzle + beef cheek because that combination is what makes it as dense as it is.
How to choose the right bully stick for your dog
Choosing the right bully stick comes down to three things: your dog's size, how hard they chew, and how long you want the session to last. Get the size wrong and either the stick disappears in five minutes, or the piece becomes a supervision risk.
Puppies, seniors and small dogs
Light chewers under 25 lb, dogs with developing or aging teeth, and any first-time chewer.
Large dogs and power chewers
Dogs over 50 lb, heavy chewers who finish standard sticks in 10 minutes, and breeds with strong jaws.
Small and medium dogs, moderate chewers
Between the two extremes. Most dogs from 25 to 50 lb sit here, along with medium-drive breeds like Beagles, Cavaliers, French Bulldogs and Cocker Spaniels.
Bully stick sizing quick reference
| Dog weight | Suggested length | Suggested tier |
|---|---|---|
| Under 15 lb (puppies, small breeds) | 4 inch | Thin or Pixie |
| 15 to 25 lb (small breeds, light chewers) | 4 to 6 inch | Standard or Thin |
| 25 to 50 lb (medium breeds, moderate chewers) | 6 to 7 inch | Standard or Select |
| 50 to 80 lb (large breeds) | 12 inch | Extra Thick, Braided, or Cold-Dried™ |
| Over 80 lb (giant breeds, power chewers) | 12 inch | Extra Thick Braided, Cold-Dried™, or Power Bully |
How long do bully sticks last?
Session length depends on your dog's chewing intensity, the tier of stick, and its length. Category averages typically range from 15 to 45 minutes; a well-matched stick can run considerably longer. Natural Farm's internal chew testing across our tier system produces the following ranges as guidance.
| Tier & length | Typical chew time |
|---|---|
| Thin / Pixie 4 to 6 inch | 10 to 20 minutes |
| Standard 6 inch | 20 to 40 minutes |
| Select 6 inch | 30 to 50 minutes |
| Extra Thick 12 inch | 60 to 120 minutes |
| Braided 12 inch | 90 to 180 minutes |
| Cold-Dried™ 6 inch | 45 to 90 minutes (outlasts a Standard 6 inch) |
| Power Bully 12 inch | 120 to 240 minutes for most power chewers |
If your dog finishes a 6 inch Standard in under 15 minutes, move up a tier (Select, Extra Thick, Braided) or move up to Cold-Dried™ before increasing the length. See Natural Farm's guide to which bully sticks last the longest.
Bully sticks vs rawhide: what is the difference?
Bully sticks and rawhide look similar on a pet-store shelf, but they are made from completely different tissue and behave differently in a dog's digestive system.
| Feature | Bully sticks | Rawhide |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Beef muscle (pizzle) | Cow or horse hide, often bleached and re-formed |
| Ingredients | Single-ingredient (Natural Farm) | Often includes processing agents, sometimes edible glue |
| Digestibility | Highly digestible; broken down in the stomach | Poorly digestible; commonly associated with intestinal blockage risk |
| Splinter risk | Softens as it is chewed | Can shed hard fragments as it breaks down |
For most owners, a single-ingredient bully stick is the more predictable choice. As with every chew, supervision matters more than category. Remove and discard the last one to two inches so a gulped end-piece cannot become a choking hazard.
Are bully sticks safe, and what do vets actually think?
Bully sticks are widely considered a safer chew than rawhide, splintering bones, or hard antlers. The honest answer to "why don't vets recommend bully sticks?" is that most reputable vets do not oppose bully sticks as a category. What they flag is two specific concerns.
Concern 1: calories
Bully sticks are calorie-dense. A 2013 Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine study led by Dr. Lisa Freeman analyzed 26 bully sticks from various manufacturers and found a mean caloric density of 15 kcal per inch, with a range of 9 to 22 kcal per inch. That puts an average 6 inch bully stick at roughly 88 calories, which is around 9% of the daily caloric needs of a 50 lb dog and about 30% for a 10 lb dog. If your dog gets a bully stick, count it toward the daily treat allowance and reduce meal portions on chew days.
Concern 2: contamination from unreliable manufacturers
The same Tufts study also found that nearly one-third of the 26 sticks tested carried bacterial contamination. That is a manufacturing-quality problem, not a bully stick problem. It is the reason Natural Farm bully sticks are lab-tested every batch by an independent third party, made in our own USDA & FDA-approved facility in Georgia, and produced without any of the shortcuts documented in the Tufts research. Marcus Maximo, Co-Founder of Natural Farm and a biologist specializing in canine nutrition and single-ingredient dog treats, sets the safety protocol directly.
Why are bully sticks so expensive?
A quality bully stick is expensive because the raw material is limited, the drying process is slow, and the supply chain has to be traceable to a specific cattle origin. One bull produces one pizzle. Slow-drying at food-safe temperatures takes days per batch, not hours. Cheap bully sticks cut those steps and often show up in independent studies with the manufacturing shortcomings the Tufts research documented.
Natural Farm's pricing reflects the actual cost of grass-fed sourcing from the US and Brazil, USDA-inspected manufacturing in Georgia, and third-party batch testing. For the fuller economics, see Natural Farm's article on why bully sticks are expensive.

What are bully sticks made of?
A single ingredient: beef pizzle. Natural Farm bully sticks are made from grass-fed beef pizzle sourced from ranches in the US and Brazil, and slow-dried in our own USDA & FDA-approved facility in Forest Park, Georgia. No additives, no preservatives, no fillers.
Are bully sticks actually good for dogs?
Yes, when supervised and correctly sized. They are highly digestible, support dental hygiene by reducing plaque and tartar, deliver useful mental stimulation, and are one of the safer alternatives to rawhide or splintering bones. The exception is dogs on strict fat or calorie restrictions, which is a conversation for your vet.
Why don't some vets recommend bully sticks?
Two specific concerns, both manageable. First, calorie content: an average 6 inch bully stick is roughly 88 calories per the 2013 Tufts Cummings study, so it needs to count toward the daily treat allowance. Second, contamination on cheap or poorly manufactured sticks. Natural Farm addresses both directly: precise sizing guidance and lab testing on every batch produced in our own USDA-inspected facility.
Why are they called bully sticks?
The name comes from the source: the pizzle of a bull. "Bully" here is short for bull, not a reference to chewing behavior. In some regions bully sticks are also called pizzle sticks or beef sticks, but the material is the same.
How long do bully sticks last?
Between 15 and 45 minutes on average, with braided and Cold-Dried™ options lasting considerably longer. A Standard 6 inch runs a moderate chewer 20 to 40 minutes; an Extra Thick 12 inch runs 60 to 120 minutes; a Braided 12 inch or Cold-Dried™ can double that for power chewers. See the duration table above for the full range.
Are Natural Farm bully sticks really odor-free, and how?
Yes, and the odor control is natural. Natural Farm bully sticks are naturally odor-free thanks to careful pizzle selection, cleaning, and low-temperature drying. No chemical deodorizers, no bleaching, and no artificial fragrance are used. That is why the phrasing is "naturally odor-free" and not "scent-treated."
Where does the beef in Natural Farm bully sticks come from?
Grass-fed cattle raised on premium ranches in the United States and Brazil. Both origins are stated openly. Manufacturing happens in Natural Farm's own USDA & FDA-approved facility in Forest Park, Georgia. "Made in the USA" describes the manufacturing; the ingredient origin is dual-origin, and Natural Farm does not conflate the two.
What is the difference between Standard, Select, Extra Thick and Power Bully?
They are thickness tiers, not different recipes. Standard is the classic bully stick; Select is one tier thicker for moderate chewers; Extra Thick is meaningfully denser for power chewers; Braided packs three pizzles together for the longest single-ingredient session. Power Bully Sticks are a separate line combining pizzle with beef cheek, which is why Power Bully is not classified as single-ingredient.
Can puppies have Natural Farm bully sticks?
Yes, generally from six months old and up, at the right size. Start with Thin or Pixie 4 inch options and supervise closely. Introduce only after your puppy is comfortably eating solid food and can chew safely. See Natural Farm's guide on when puppies can eat bully sticks.
